Description
This is the third of four novellas in the Old New York series. The dust jacket has a flower pattern that frames a picture of a row of men holding guns. The dusk jacket has several tears, revealing a blue cover underneath. Edward C. Caswell illustrated the novella; his illustration on the front endpaper shows a crowd of people watching a horse polo competition. The back endpaper shows two aristocratic men pouring over books in a study filled with armchairs, paintings, and a fireplace.
This novella follows the life of a young man who joined the war effort at a young age and had a chance encounter with poet Walt Whitman; the encounter left a life-long impression on the man. In adult life, the man marries an unfaithful woman, but is still dedicated to her aging, ailing father.
