König Oedipus

Dublin Core

Title

Hofmannsthal, Hugo von

König Oedipus

Subject

Hofmannsthal, Hugo von

Description

"Tragödie von Sophokles"

This book follows Hofmannsthal's adaptation of Sophocles's "Oedipus Rex". It would be incorrect to call this a translation because Hofmannsthal takes it upon himself to omit entirely or sketch out differently the chorus' additions in the story. He even goes as far as dividing and breaking up the longer speeches.

The cover of this edition is dark green color and then has a white spine binding. In the middle fo the cover, there is an inlay of a box in white. Inside the box, there is a basket or vase overflowing with foliage.
The corners of the cover are damages with age and missing their color. The white spine seems to have mold all over it because of the muted white color. There are also a few scuff marks riddled on the cover which could have many different meanings.

On the inside of the cover, there is an Edith Wharton bookplates. This one is from Sainte-Claire-du-Chateau Hyeres, it is in a horizontal shaped box with alternating design around the edges. At the top of the page in the right-hand corner, there is a price marking, "3-", it seems to have been made in pencil. There are only a few mold spots present on this page and very small insect marks as well.

The title page states the title, subtitle and author's name. At the bottom of the page, there is the publication information and the date. There are a few insect damage spots scattered throughout.

On page 49, there is a golden ribbon present and a spot of mold near the page number on the bottom of the page.

Ramsden states in his catalog that this edition has vellum-backed boards.
